The Saint Lawrence River was formerly known as MAGTOGOEK, or "the walking path", by Indigenous peoples. It is considered one of the largest rivers in the world and is now ranked ninth most threatened river in the Americas. This mighty waterway flows through Quebec, naturally forming part of the border between Canada and the United States.
This immense Canadian lake serves as a natural boundary, with Ontario on one side and Quebec on the other. Its name derives from the Algonquin word timiskaming, which means "at the deep lake."
The NOTTAWAY River winds through northern Quebec and was once a major fur trade route. Today, it is no longer a commercial route, but it remains an incredible destination for paddlers.
For thousands of years, the KINOJEVIS River, flowing through Abitibi-Témiscamingue, served as a travel route for the Algonquins who traveled between the Harricana and Ottawa river basins. KINOJEVIS is believed to be a distortion of the Algonquin word 'kenogewich' meaning 'bad pike'. The pike is found throughout the river and supposedly has a reputation for tasting rather unpleasant.
