Expedition canoes: choosing your Prospector
Several days in the backcountry, portages, long lakes and rivers that change mood: an expedition canoe must stay manoeuvrable when loaded, hold its line on open water and carry without breaking your back. That is exactly what the Prospector was designed for.

What makes a true expedition canoe
- A deep hull to keep gear dry in waves and rapids.
- Moderate rocker (the upward curve of the keel line from end to end): enough to turn easily on rivers, not so much that it loses glide on lakes.
- A reasonable weight, because an expedition canoe is carried as much as it is paddled.
- Gear designed for portaging: a deep yoke, solid handles, protected ends.

Which length to choose?
Prospector 15': family or solo adventures
Shorter and lighter, it carries easily and handles precisely, even with a single paddler. Ideal for trips of a few days, small rivers and anyone who often paddles alone.
Prospector 16': our reference expedition canoe
The most versatile in the collection. It performs on long lakes as well as rivers, on short and long trips. Its bent ash hung seats are included. If you are unsure, this is probably the one.
Prospector 17': long expeditions, no compromise
970 lb of capacity to head out with two or three people and all the gear, without choosing what to leave behind. Its one-inch rocker gives it a smooth glide on big lakes while staying manoeuvrable on rivers.

Fibreglass or Kevlar?
Fibreglass is tough, easy to repair and more affordable. Kevlar saves 5 to 7 pounds depending on the model, a difference you feel on every portage. If your trips include several portages a day, Kevlar is often worth it. Our guide Kevlar or fibreglass explains both options in detail.
Included, and useful options
Every Prospector comes with stem guards on both ends and a deep-dish ash portage yoke that fits your neck and shoulders.
Options: the protective coating for rocky rivers, a kneeling thwart, aluminium trim and our designs to personalize your canoe.
